API strengthens oil well safety with updated valve standards
The American Petroleum Institute (API) announced the release of the 13th edition of API Spec 14A, "Subterranean Safety Valves and Annular Safety Valve Equipment." This edition enhances the well integrity standard and is the first to include guidance on annular safety valves (ASVs). An evolving technology critical to well safety, this update, along with the Subsurface Safety Valve (SSV) guidance, improves the safety and integrity of completion architecture, helping to protect the global gas and oil industry. People, environment and equipment.
Scope and major updates
Subsurface safety valves covered in previous versions of API Spec 14A provide a fail-safe mechanism for controlling wellbore flow during emergency shutdowns, such as those that occur following fire, severe weather, or downhole equipment failure. This release extends the scope by including the requirements for ASV, which are commonly used with SSV. This standardization improves the reliability and safety performance of both types of valves in well operations, which is an important advancement in operational safety. In addition, this version also introduces new verification levels, enhanced test requirements and new normative appendices, which together meet the industry's latest valve safety needs.
Version 13 also addresses security issues incorporated into the API monogramming program. SSV has been part of the program for a long time. Going forward, organizations that demonstrate their ability to manufacture ASVs under the new version of API Spec 14A will also be eligible for licensing. This important addition will make it easier to identify SSVs and ASVs manufactured to the strict requirements of API Spec 14A.
Continuous improvement to improve safety
The release of this updated standard reaffirms API's commitment to improving safety, operational integrity and environmental protection throughout the natural gas and oil industry. By incorporating the latest technology and industry feedback into this new version, API furthers the industry's commitment to protecting workers, communities and the environment.
